The Slowweave project is concerned with slowing down, observing and reflecting on our everyday experience of the space of architecture. We are asking members of the public to complete a series of exercises which ‘map’ the physical environment of selected sites in various Offaly towns and villages. The resulting observations create a topography of public consciousness:  a deepened engagement with the environment of place.

Slowweave encourages a fresh awareness of our surroundings that can happen when we tune in to our senses. We notice the elaborate tapestry in the way in which people and creatures inhabit the space surrounding & within architecture (built form/planned environment/designed space), layered with the effect of raindrops on the pavement or the shape of a shadow on a wall. We start to hear interesting sounds that tell us about what’s happening around us, of unseen activities  happening at every moment.

In Slowweave, participating observers are invited to complete a series of exercises at their chosen site. The exercises are generally space-related, and require the participant to record their observations in some way (using drawings, photography, film, audio recordings etc). Some exercises focus on observing people and some deal with the self within the space. Some focus on qualities of light and shadow. Some require creative thinking and some will require the observer to list a series of elements. The compiled exercises will provide an individual’s interpretation of the given place.

Slowweave was first developed by Caelan Bristow for  the Slow Architecture & Place exhibition 2010 (curated by Michael Haslam), which took place on a barge travelling along the Grand Canal from Tullamore to Dublin during September & October 2010. The 2011 Slow Architecture & Place exhibition will travel from  Athy to Waterford from May to July.

Slowweave is ongoing and ever expanding: every observation leads to further exploration and enrichment of the slow experience.
